The event took place at the Enterprise Arena in St. Louis, Missouri, and featured an array of exciting matches, including the debut of a former NJPW star and a dramatic finish to the WWE Undisputed Championship match, with John Cena using controversial tactics to retain his title.
Jacob Fatu vs Damian Priest vs Drew McIntyre vs LA Knight (Fatal 4-Way for WWE United States Championship)
The night kicked off with a chaotic Fatal 4-Way match for Jacob Fatu's WWE United States Championship. The match spilled to the ringside, with all four superstars using the environment to their advantage. Damian Priest and Drew McIntyre took their rivalry into the crowd, with Priest hitting a South of Heaven chokeslam from a raised platform. Solo Sikoa appeared to help Fatu, but was taken out by LA Knight. In a shocking moment, Jeff Cobb made his surprise debut, attacking Knight and helping Fatu hit a moonsault to retain his title.
Becky Lynch vs Lyra Valkyria (WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship)
Becky Lynch faced Lyra Valkyria in a hard-fought match for the WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship. Despite some underhanded tactics from Lynch, Valkyria managed to score a roll-up victory, retaining her title. However, Lynch lost her composure and attacked Valkyria post-match before storming off.
Penta vs Dominik Mysterio (WWE Intercontinental Championship)
In a rematch from RAW, Dominik Mysterio defended his WWE Intercontinental Championship against Penta. The high-flying action was intense, and despite interference from Judgment Day, Penta fought back. However, El Grande Americano, Penta's rival, appeared and attacked him, allowing Mysterio to secure a win with a frogsplash.
Pat McAfee vs Gunther
Pat McAfee showed great determination against the dominant Gunther. Despite a valiant effort, Gunther proved too much for McAfee and ultimately locked him in a sleeper hold to secure the win. After the match, Gunther showed respect to McAfee before leaving the ring.
John Cena vs Randy Orton (WWE Undisputed Championship)
The main event saw John Cena defending his Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton in Orton's hometown. The match was filled with high drama, with Orton having multiple opportunities to pin Cena, only for a referee to be taken out each time. In the chaotic final moments, R-Truth interfered to stop Orton from delivering a punt kick to Cena, only to be RKO'd. Cena seized the opportunity to hit Orton with a low blow and use the title belt to secure the victory and retain his championship.
Despite the lack of title changes, WWE Backlash 2025 was an action-packed show that delivered surprises, intense rivalries, and dramatic moments that will be remembered for years to come.
